Enlightenment Luncheon

Enlightenment Luncheon 2010

Enlightenment. What does that word really mean? The official definition is: education that results in understanding and the spread of knowledge. The  Enlightenment Luncheon series is something that  has educated me on a variety of topics. I have been a part of the last few events  and this  luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 11 is the fourth in a series of presentations on children’s environmental health issues. The topic for November’s luncheon will be on Childhood Obesity: An Issue Plaguing Our Nation’s Youth. The keynote speaker is William H. Dietz, M.D., Ph.D., who is the Director of the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity at the CDC. There will be a panel of four doctors discussing this issue & a special interest speaker.

Stephanie Blank, Laura Turner Seydel & Lisa Tush are the event’s co-chairs & I am thrilled to have been invited to be on the host committee again along with other incredible women like Meg Reggie, Mikki Douglas, Vikki Locke & Holli Hines Easton. Additionally, there are only 2 seats left at my table & tickets for the event are just $50. This includes lunch from the Four Seasons as the luncheon is at the Four Seasons in midtown from 12 to 2; registration starts at 11. Join us & learn what you can do to promote healthy families, homes & communities.

As a mother myself, I truly know that this is such a crucial issue as I have seen some of my own children’s friends who are overweight & what an adverse effect that has on them. But as with my participation in other Enlightenment Luncheons, I want to help eradicate this problem & have seen through my experience that a key way to eradicating issues is discussing them, bringing them up in public forums so people can take action.

Obviously, I am a huge proponent of a healthy body image, but also a healthy mindset on what real beauty is. You know through my previous blogs about my involvement with Project Authentic Beauty, America the Beautiful, the Image Journeys we offer and much more, that I am 1,000% committed to making sure not only girls, but also women, no matter their shape or size, have a healthy body image, a realistic view of beauty & know that no matter what they are beautiful. The reason why Authentic Beauty exists is because I want all women to love themselves for who they are &  what they look like. Just like I did, I want all women to find their Authentic Self and learn how to express her Authentic Image. I have been so thrilled  because I have seen so many girls/women this year really hear what I say to them about society’s unrealistic standard of beauty. They are understanding that they do not need to conform to society’s standard but instead learn how to tap into their own Authentic Beauty.

Furthermore, every Enlightenment Luncheon issues have been brought up that need to be discussed, and brought out in the open. In 2009, Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Anila Jacob, an EWG senior scientist discussed industrial chemicals and pollutants & their effect on children, which was/is something that I am so passionate about. Remember when I blogged & talk all the time about the chemicals & additives in make-up? Soooo important. Also on Feb. 24, 2010, Phil Landrigan, MD, MSc, professor and chair, Department of Preventive Medicine, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and director, Children’s Environmental Health Center talked about the National Children’s Study. And Emory researcher Anne Fitzpatrick, PhD, spoke on April 27, 2010, about asthma and clean air.

These luncheons are so important to further the discussion on these significant issues. Again I hope you can attend the luncheon with me on Thursday, Nov. 11. Not only will it give you chance to learn more about childhood obesity, but it will also allow you to network with some of Atlanta’s most influential philanthropists. If you can’t make the lunch, come stop by & see me or book an appointment with me online. Call Stephanie at 404-849-0443 or [email protected].
