Nothing says fall quite like a bold lip…be it Candy Apple Red or Deep Bordeaux, a bold lip color choice is the absolute quickest way to update your makeup look for fall.
In fact, when choosing a bold lip, it is far more tasteful and modern to pair it with minimal makeup on the rest of your face.
The best method of applying a bold lip is to actually begin with lips. While this may seem counter-intuitive, beginning with lips will allow you to only apply as much eye makeup and cheek color as needed. If you do lips last, often times you will find that your blush needs to be blended out more, or that you need to tone down your eyes. Doing the lips first will save you from having to spend that extra time.
Many designers chose bold lips for their fall 2012 fashion shows. Among them: Monique Lhuillier, Charlotte Ronson, Christian Siriano, Gucci, Thakoon, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Nina Ricci, Rochas, and Victoria Beckham, to name a few.
Our version of this look, from the Full House collection, is the Queen of Hearts. This classic but modern look pairs softly highlighted eyes with bold red lips.
To begin, prep the skin with foundation first, then line and fill in the lips completely with Ravishing Red lip pencil ($13). Top this with lipstick in Chili ($15.50), and finish with a touch of Beauty for Real lipgloss in Midnight ($24).
Next, line the top lash lines with White pencil ($13) and blend out with a tiny smudge brush, like the Squirrel Precision Blender ($26).
Next, press Crystal Shimmer eyeshadow ($15) onto the lid with a Chisel Deluxe Fluff ($12.50). Blend out the lid color with a flesh toned face powder and a tapered crease brush, like the Squirrel Mini Crease ($25).
Finally, mix Black Onyx eyeshadow ($15) with Eyeliner Sealer ($12) and create a very delicate line along the top lash line only. Flick the end of the line upward and outward for a little retro glamour. Add some White pencil ($13) to the inner rim of the lower lash line, or the waterline, as we call it in the biz. This will keep your eye looking bright, wide-awake, and open.
If you need a little color on the cheeks, choose a soft fleshy tone like Sandalwood ($15). Nothing too bright- you may find that you don’t even need any blush, as a red lip will really bring out the natural color in your cheeks.
