On September 10, 2005, the first annual “A Tribute to Our Quiet Heroes” was held at the Westin Buckhead Atlanta. In support and furtherance of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, this unique and inspiring event, hosted by Chris Glavine, honored mothers of children with cancer. At the same time, the event raised much needed funds to support pediatric cancer research at leading children’s hospitals nationwide, including Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
In 2004, Atlanta Braves’ pitcher Tom Glavine, and his wife, Chris, joined the fight against childhood cancer, inspired by their personal connection to a number of families with children fighting cancer in Atlanta. Through these relationships, the Glavines witnessed the burdens that befall entire families as they struggle to maintain some semblance of normalcy while trying to care for a child with a life-threatening illness. Chris recognized that the burden is carried most heavily on the shoulders of the mothers of these children. On September 10, 2005, Chris and the Quiet Heroes host committee honored these deserving mothers at a beautiful luncheon. The event raised over $100,000.
Since then, the event has drawn sell out crowds year after year and has raised more than $1 million for pediatric cancer research. More than 1,000 mothers of children with cancer have been honored for their courage, strength and determination.
